A product is not automatically good if it is priced higher than others. Likewise, less expensive products do not necessarily mean that they are bad for you. Every product that you look at should be considered individually, regardless of brand name or price point.
The Truth About Omega 3 GNC
This brand claims to make an Omega 3 product free of mercury, cadmium, lead, and PCBs. This is a good thing, as concentrations of these metals can be very harmful to your health. Unfortunately, this product has very little else in its favor. It touts a long list of things which it does not contain, such as sugar, starch, artificial colors, preservatives, sodium, gluten, and dairy. There is sadly, an equally long list of included ingredients:
• Fish body oil
• Rosemary extract
• Vitamin E
• Lemon flavor
GNC states that its product has been deodorized. This begs the question of just how long the fish sit around before being processed. Fresh fish have very little smell. Only as they grow old on the shelf do they develop the fishy smell. This is perhaps why GNC adds lemon flavor to their supplement, to distract consumers from the taste of rotten fish. Ingredients such as gelatin and glycerin are used to lower costs, as they are filler ingredients. The product contains 300 mg of DHA and EPA. GNC does not disclose, however, how much of each fatty acid is present. There may be 299 mg of DHA and only 1 mg of EPA.
The product is not fish oil. It is a supplement made using fish oil and mixed with other ingredients to cheapen its production cost. Frankly, your body deserves better than this. In making a decision, you will need to weigh the cost benefit with the quality of the product you are purchasing. Is the little bit of money you may save buying a GNC supplement worth the questionable ingredients? If it is not worth it to you, there are much better alternatives that will are still affordable.
A Better Alternative
Xtend-Life fish oil supplements contain only fish oil. They include an ideal ratio of DHA to EPA. Xtend-Life does not rely on flavors or preservatives to mask a fishy taste and odor. The fish used in manufacturing are fresh, and, therefore, no cover-up is needed. The tuna used in the supplement are caught from the cleanest and purest waters on earth, between New Zealand and Antarctica. The product then goes through a stringent purification process to ensure removal of any toxins.
Xtend-Life supplements are always 100% free of toxic metals, such as mercury, lead, and PCBs. At an affordable price of $16.85, there is no reason not to consider purchasing a quality Omega 3 supplement, instead of a cheap one full of useless or harmful fillers. Omega 3 GNC brand may be economical for your wallet, but it is not a price that your health should have to pay.
